By Baroque Hour

Choosing pearl jewelry online should feel exciting—and reassuring. You want to know what you are buying, understand the pearl’s character, and feel comfortable asking questions before you choose.
At Baroque Hour, that experience begins with our founder, Zijing Fang. Zijing has long helped customers choose pearls, and she has recently completed the Gemological Institute of America’s Pearls course, earning her Pearls Certificate, dated October 23, 2026.
Her experience and continuing education support the knowledgeable, personal service we aim to offer every customer: helping you understand your options and find baroque pearl jewelry you will love wearing.
Meet Zijing, Our Founder

Zijing founded Baroque Hour around an appreciation for the individual beauty of baroque pearls. Their shapes, surfaces, and luster give each pearl its own character—and give every customer something personal to discover.
Over time, Zijing has helped customers choose pearls for their individual tastes and occasions. For some, that might mean finding a simple pair of earrings for everyday wear. For others, it might be a necklace with a more sculptural shape, or a meaningful gift.
Pearl knowledge makes those conversations more useful. When you understand what “freshwater cultured,” “baroque,” or “luster” means, it becomes easier to compare pieces, ask the right questions, and choose with confidence.
The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and Pearl Certification
“The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is recognized worldwide as the leading authority in gemology. Their certification programs are considered the gold standard for jewelers, gemologists, and anyone in the jewelry business. Earning a GIA certification signifies a deep understanding of a gemstone.”

GIA’s Pearls course covers pearl formation, pearl varieties, treatments, and the factors that influence quality and value. It also explores the differences between natural, cultured, and imitation pearls.

For Zijing, completing the course adds formal pearl education to her experience helping customers. For you, it means the guidance at Baroque Hour draws on a deeper understanding of the material behind the jewelry—from the way a pearl reflects light to the details that give a piece its character.
With her GIA Pearls credential, Zijing brings gemological rigor to every piece she curates, ensuring you choose with clarity and trust.

How We Approach Pearl Quality
A beautiful baroque pearl can be wonderfully individual. Understanding its quality means looking at more than its shape.
At Baroque Hour, we work with genuine freshwater cultured baroque pearls. We consider details such as shape, tone, size, luster, and surface character when selecting and matching pearls for our designs. Before shipping, we check each piece for appearance, finish, comfort, and presentation, as described in our brand story.
Here are a few details worth knowing when you browse:
- Luster: Notice how light reflects from the pearl. Brightness and the clarity of reflections help describe its luster.
- Shape and surface: “Baroque” refers to an irregular shape. Surface condition is a separate consideration; natural features can be part of a pearl’s appearance, while significant damage may affect its durability.
- Size and matching: A pearl’s proportions affect how it looks when worn. In pieces with more than one pearl, size, tone, and luster also contribute to the balance of the design.
These observations are informed by GIA’s pearl quality factors. They give you a starting point for understanding a piece—and for telling us what matters to you.
Guidance for Finding Your Piece
Whether you are looking at an understated pendant or a statement necklace, Zijing and the Baroque Hour team want to make choosing easier. We can help you consider the pearl’s shape and proportions, understand the details in a product description, and explore a style for your wardrobe or occasion.
Because cultured baroque pearls vary, the pearl you receive will have its own character. Look for details such as pearl type and dimensions on the product page; some pages also explain how we select a pearl with a similar shape to the photograph. If you would like to understand a particular design before ordering, contact our team and tell us which piece has caught your eye.

Your Questions, Answered
Are freshwater cultured pearls real pearls?
Yes. Cultured pearls form in living mollusks with human involvement in the cultivation process; they are different from imitation pearls. Natural pearls, in the gemological sense, form without human intervention. GIA explains the distinction.
Will my pearl look exactly like the photograph?
Baroque pearls have individual shapes and features, so the pearl you receive may differ from the image. Review the product description and ask us about any detail that matters to you before ordering.
Can I get help choosing?
Yes. Share the pieces you are considering and what you would like to know. Our team can help you understand the details and choose a design that suits you.
